Big Bad Badger
I recently entered a competition to have an illustration published in an upcoming Dungeons & Dragons adventure. It's a republication of an old adventure called Against the Slave Lords, so I was able to look through the previous version and pick something to draw. One part features a giant badger and, as one of the entry requirements was that the image be black and white, I thought this would be a good choice! Painting in greyscale ended up being quite a challenge, as I had to stop myself thinking in terms of his yellow fangs, or his dank green cavernous surroundings.
I'm really happy to say though that my picture got picked as one of the illustrations for the book! The badger can start terrorising hapless adventurers when the book is released in June.

He's really cool, love the little critter skeletons .
ReplyDeleteThanks Chibi! The adventure describes the badger as eating nothing but shellfish and the occasional kobold, so I thought their bones would be a good addition :)
DeleteWow!! Awesome illustration!! I would have picked this illustration too for the book, congrats on this!! You are right, perfect choice to do the badger, works really well in black and white! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Isabelle! I'm happy you like him!
DeleteWell done! I can see why you were selected. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Lisa!
DeleteYou did am amazing job of seeing the values, he is so vibrant even though he's in b/w. He's a meanie, I love how his face is highlighted. Congratulations on being picked for the book!
ReplyDeleteThank you Jennifer! Yep, he is quite a meanie.. grumpy, hungry and bored of eating shellfish :)

ReplyDeleteHehe, thanks!
Deletecongrats!!
ReplyDeletegreat work, he looks scary!
Love it. I was reading up on Beholder Pie, fun stuff. You are doing what I am working toward doing; I just graduated with my MFA in Creative Writing (for gaming). My thesis was a 126-page script for a game; I am working on storyboards and illustrations at this point. I am a long-time gamer, my husband and I both are, and we both write. Looking forward to seeing more on both sites!
ReplyDeleteHey, thanks so much Ria! The written content on Beholder Pie is from my boyfriend, whilst I work on the majority of the artwork, though we both love D&D and games in general really.
DeleteYour course sounds really interesting! (and demanding - 126 page script must have been so much work!) My boyfriend currently works as a video games designer and has a hand in writing lots of scripts. I worked as an environment artist in video games too 'til very recently - we had to uproot and move house, so I decided to take a break and try my hand at illustration.
Check back on Beholder Pie soon! There should be new content up in the next few weeks :)
And good luck with whatever direction your MFA takes you - I'd love to hear how you get on!
