I've been working on some some nautical-themed wizard's familiars for an upcoming Beholder Pie article. Intermittently over the past few months I've been helping Will create a fantasy roleplay campaign world called Drowned Kingdoms (you can see the maps and articles here if you like). One of the locations in this world is a citadel sunk deep beneath the ocean which houses an academy for wizards. In the game Dungeons & Dragons, wizards get to select a familiar which they form a magical bond with. Familiars are pretty smart creatures and can communicate with their masters, even learning how to wield magic themselves. These four, given their names by Will, are what I thought a typical wizard from the waters might choose!
I'd be very tempted by a gull, but ultimately I think I would go for a crab. Murl looks like he'd be quite good at alchemy, holding bottles of bubbling potions in his big claws; I could see us staying up into the wee hours chatting and mixing potions. Which would you choose?

you have been busy! What a diversity! I love them, all of them. Especially Castavan and Wodlock. My favorite would be Wodlock with his hairstyle and a necklace. Good job!
ReplyDeleteThanks Lena! It was fun to try a couple of different animals that I wouldn't normally draw - especially the crab, they're really fascinating to look at. Wodlock is a cool choice - he does look very wizardly! :)
DeleteThese are fantastic, I love Castavan and Wodlock best too! Such great creatures and it is a great project!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Jennifer! It is a fun project to work on - I don't often think to draw crabs or turtles! :)
DeleteThank you Alexandra! Castavan ruffles his feathers proudly at you :)
ReplyDeleteI love that penguin. He definitely looks like he has a magic touch. Thanks for checking out TDAT and my map. I would love to see a map in your style!
ReplyDeleteThanks Sharon :) Maybe I will try one of those maps!
DeleteI love your cute animals! Each has such a lovely individual character :) and I love the colors too.
ReplyDeleteThank you Stefanie!
