This was a bit of an experiment..! Using a black and white photo as reference, I started shading in shapes with a black pastel pencil instead of roughing it out in charcoal first. Pastel pencils are harder than soft pastels, which is great for precision but less forgiving under a putty rubber. I just had to go with the marks I made!
