Illustration Friday - Snow
I'm from Dundee in Scotland and when I was growing up we had a lot of snow over the winter. My high school sat at the top of a very steep hill, which meant it closed quite often when snow fell heavily.
I remember one stormy morning, I was sat huddled around the radio, praying that the local news would list my school as one of the schools which had shut due to the bad weather, particularly as I had band practice that day.. and the thought of lugging my euphonium through the snow was not very appealing, as a euphonium is quite a weighty bit of brass - one size category down from a tuba!
But my school wasn't on the list, so off I went. It was only a mile's walk (of course there were no buses running!) but it felt like a desperate polar expedition, with only me to carry all the heavy supplies.
As the school came into view I saw cars trying to ascend the treacherous slope, but failing and sliding back down into a skidding whirlpooling mass of vehicles. Needless to say, school was off, and I had no choice but to turn and trudge all the way back..!
It was this memory that inspired my Illustration Friday submission this week. To this day I don't know why I didn't just leave the euphonium at home.

What a story! School at the top of a steep hill doesn't sound like a very good idea to begin with. And I've never heard of a euphonium (it sounds like a magical element missing from the Periodic Table!)
ReplyDeleteCool illustration! Great characters and love the color!
Thank you Cindy!
DeleteHeh, yep, the hill proved pretty annoying a lot of the time.. it was so steep that we had a handrail running all the way up that we'd have to cling to when it was icy.
And I agree that a euphonium does sound like an element, I hadn't thought of that before!
Great texture. The painting really illustrates the story. Very nicely done.
ReplyDeleteI have never been to Dundee, but I did enjoy visiting Scotland. I spent most of my time in between Edinburgh, Duns and Berwick-upon-Tweed!
Thanks so much Nick!
DeleteDundee's just a little way north of Edinburgh, so you weren't too far away - probably not much difference in temperature!
Love your story and nice illustration to go with it, Poppy! Those snow days which resulted in school cancelations were always welcome news here in Utah as well.
ReplyDeleteHow blustery! Love it!
